My earliest music video memory

I remember it was after midnight. I was ten. I couldn’t sleep. I found my older brother on the living room couch watching TV. He couldn’t sleep. I asked him what he was watching — City Limits — a late night music show before the 24/7 music channel MuchMusic came to be.

On the TV were music videos. I hadn’t heard of a music videos and at first they seemed odd: short, no dialogue, no story.

The VJ was dressed like a maintenance man and was searching for Only You by The Flying Pickets in a dusty basement. This video got my brother very excited. My brother explained that there were no instruments and everything we heard was through people singing. I was amazed.

  1. Hi Uzo, nice to hear from you :)

I’m not sure if music videos had a direct influence on my desire for filmmaking, but perhaps on a subconscious level!

If you’re in Toronto you should email me and we can go for a coffee!
